Here are a few photos of the boat I built with my son in the summer of 1998. We got the plans from Harold "Dynamite" Payson, after reading his book Instant Boats. Actually, I'd been reading articles about Harold and Phil Bolger (designer of the boats) for 20 years or so in magazines like Small Boat Journal, and Wooden Boat. One of the main motivations was to get my son, Will, off this infernal computer. On that score, it worked middling well. Anyway, we built Teal, below. We started working in July on partial days. We were rowing by mid August, and there really wasn't that "epic" feel of an endurance project. It was fun , even if there were a few dark moments, right after some dreadful mistake. I am planning to build another two boats at least, and will definitely use Payson/Bolger Plans. Harold Payson's web site is at instantboats.com.

The rowing version (above) was completed in August '98. The sailing rig (right) was finished over the winter toward a happy launch in June 1999. She is fast, too, and moves very well to windward. We outran a sunfish in that direction on our maiden voyage. |
